Naadam this year was a truly
spectacular event, starting with the opening ceremony where 800 singers,
dressed in colorful national costumes and accompanied by 800 musicians
playing traditional Mongolian instruments ringed the stadium. The
nine State White Banners were carried into the stadium by the mounted
Honor Guard and placed on a platform for the duration of the festival.
After singing of the National Anthem and speeches by the President and
other dignitaries there was a fabulous show, with colorful dance routines, incredible displays of horsemanship,
a lap of honor by Chinggis Khan riding a white horse and a huge
ger cart pulled by oxen. The three manly sports of wrestling, archery and horse racing were held over the three days of Naadam. The whole place took on a festive air, with throngs of people, many of them wearing their national dress, at every event.
